What are the breeds of dogs that are supposed to tolerate loneliness and solitude better and are less affected by being away from home? Is there any breed of dog that can easily tolerate little contact with its owner and his family, even for years, without distorting its personality?

First of all, let’s be clear: dogs are social creatures and they need to belong to someone and somewhere, and they usually consider them to be part of the bevy. In this sense, therefore, it can be said that there is no breed of dog that takes prolonged solitude or loneliness for granted or tolerates it well. It is also true, however, that dog breeds have been developed for many purposes throughout human history. Some of these dogs have been expected to perform and solve tasks completely independently for centuries. These are the breeds that, although solitude is not their nature, are perhaps better able to cope with it than the more social or people-oriented breeds.

It should of course also be noted here that any prospective owner who wishes to live with a dog must carry out a self-check. They must give an honest answer to themselves whether they have enough free time to take the responsibility of keeping a dog. If the answer to this question is no, and the future owner is not sure that he will have at least an hour or two a day to spend with his dog, then it is better to choose an animal that is not as social as a dog.

Here and now, we make no distinction between dogs kept at home and dogs kept in yards, nor do we address the situation where someone can choose to keep dogs in pairs, which can go a long way to relieving the loneliness of the dog…

In this Hungarian video you can see this breeds:

7. Boston Terrier

Many people choose Boston Terriers as a pet because they are small, smart and similar to Boxers. Although they are an energetic breed, the Boston Terrier is perhaps the only terrier that does not suffer from severe loneliness, especially when given the right amount of interesting toys to keep them entertained. If you are looking for a breed that is agile but can tolerate a certain amount of solitude, the Boston Terrier may be a good choice.

6. French Bulldog

Although French Bulldogs love company and long to be with their loved ones, they don’t despair when they need to spend more time alone. As they are not working dogs and most of them do not have high energy levels, an adult French Bulldog can easily nap the day away while the owner is away and is not prone to causing any particular damage in the home.

5. Chinese Shar-Pei

This ancient Chinese breed, with its warrior past and unique appearance, is generally calmer and more sedate than most dogs. He is a definite one-owner type and is often unaffected by the presence of other animals, tolerating periods of solitude slightly better than average. Shar-Pei is also described by his fans as a very serious dog, much less prone to fooling around and having fun than other dog breeds.

4. Chow Chow

One of the oldest breeds of dog, the Chinese Chow Chow has a very unique character, as well as a different appearance from the average. In many ways, her character is most comparable to the stubbornness and individualism of a cat, stubborn, headstrong and not very sociable, which makes this dog more tolerant of solitude. This is also due to the fact that the Chow Chow is a very comfortable and not very active breed.

3. Saint Bernard

Almost everyone knows the Saint Bernard, whose ancestors once rescued stranded people from the snow in the Swiss mountain passes. Nowadays, the Saint Bernard has grown into a huge, extremely calm breed who fits in perfectly with the family, loves children and is quiet and patient in the garden when he returns home at the end of the day. His patience and peace of mind are legendary, and his exercise requirements are minimal, reduced to almost zero during the warmer months of the year.

2. Tibetan Mastiff

The Tibetan Mastiff, which is a mastiff onliy in name and perhaps more correct called mountain dog, has for centuries been a guardian and protector, where it has had to perform its duties entirely independently in the vast territories it has been entrusted with. For this reason, this breed is very independent and does not suffer from the absence of human presence in the same way as the vast majority of Western breeds, or even the true mastiffs. It needs contact with its owners, but it also tolerates being left alone in the yard in its care.

1. Large herding dogs

Of all the large herding dogs, such as the Anatolian Shepherd Dog, the Sarplaninac, the Central Asian Shepherd or even the Hungarian Kuvasz, we can’t highlight any, but they are undoubtedly the ones that can cope best with being alone. These breeds have been selected and bred for centuries, for thousands of years, to protect an area or a herd perfectly. If possible without human assistance, and to make effective decisions on their own in an emergency. This does not mean, of course, that these breeds can be left entirely to their own devices, and indeed all of them require serious socialisation as puppies. However, these breeds will not despair if they have to perform their tasks alone for a few days without the supervision of their owner.
