They can read our facial expressions and body language, understand our feelings, immediately sense when we are tense and in need of comfort, and save lives in the literal and figurative sense of the word. Whether it's people struggling with depression, visually impaired individuals, the elderly, or children, they are always there. And even when there is trouble! Just think of the rescue efforts after the September 11 terrorist attacks or the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Dogs are our best friends, but for many of us, they also represent the greatest inspiration. For generations, they have served as countless photographers’ models and muses. Today, you can see these incomparable and irreplaceable animals through the lenses of 5 different dog photographers. They are real artist!

1.) Audrey Bellot

Audrey Bellot adopted her first dog, Laost, a border collie, from a shelter. It is not surprising that since then, they have become inseparable and together explore the wonders of the Earth. The artist now discovers hidden treasures in wild places with her four-legged models, from the secluded Gljúfrabúi waterfall in Iceland to the rugged landscapes of the dormant volcanic eruptions of Puy de Dôme in France.

The natural world, with its shades of greens, purples, and blues, lends a sublime effect to her photos; they seem to transport us to a time before existence, when dogs still ruled the Earth.

2.) Sandy van Kruysdijk

Sandy is a passionate photographer, but professionally, she is a veterinarian. This is one of the reasons she has a special connection with animals. Among her canine muses are Skûtsje, her own favorite; Scotty, her sister’s dog; and Pukkie, an older four-legged friend who once belonged to her grandparents. Skûtsje always gladly accompanies Sandy on woodland walks, whether they are strolling in the winter snow or wandering amidst the blooming spring flowers. We simply call this idyllic.

3.) Elke Vogelsang

Elke Vogelsang started her career as a pet photographer by capturing images of dogs in shelters. Today, she finds her greatest inspiration in her three adopted companions. One of her dogs, Loli, was born in Germany after her mother arrived from Spain, and she was initially just skin and bones. The veterinarians saw no chance of her survival, and due to a tumor, even her eye had to be removed. This summer, she turned 11 and is enjoying the most wonderful days of her life.

To capture the lively personalities of her dogs in their truest form, Elke often experiments with unconventional lenses.

4.) Iza Lyson

Iza and her dog, Opi, who just turned five, explore the world together. They have visited, among other places, the waterfalls of Slovenia and the glaciers of Norway. They have slept in tents in the mountains and have spent countless sunrises side by side. In some locations, such as the shores of the Adriatic Sea, they walked for miles without encountering a single soul.

The photographer’s first source of inspiration, Luna, still receives the respect befitting a muse to this day, even at the age of 12!

5.) Carlos Mardones

As the owner of DogExpression, Carlos Mardones gladly welcomes pets of any shape and size into his home and studio. He always takes the time to get to know his four-legged clients and ensures that they feel comfortable and at ease during the photo sessions. From funny hats to flying treats, he isn’t afraid to inject humor into these events, highlighting the unique personalities of each furry friend.

Looking at such photos, one might think that future generations will have an idea of how much people admired and loved dogs nowdays.
