We found a very cute shot of a Bernese Mountain Dog puppy, whose talkative look tells you he has no idea what’s going on at the vet.

Those eyes!

The puppy is less than a year old, so he hasn’t had much experience of veterinarian visits and the vet’s clinic. And there’s a clear sign of it: the surprised dog makes eyes that can’t be held without laughing during the examination.

And when he gets his next vaccination, the huge dog eyes get even more rounded. His owner, meanwhile, smiles sweetly in the background, hugging his terrified pet tightly. But what is the reason why so many dogs panic when it’s time to visit the doctor? There is an explanation!

We talk a lot about how important it is to buy from responsible breeders, and if we can, we try to introduce you to such. Two litters of Bernese Mountain Dogs were born in the Jacks&Bears kennel in October, whose puppies are the offspring of award-winning parents. You can get detailed information about the little ones here.

Why is your dog afraid of the vet?

Think about it! You go to an unusual, strange place, full of mostly pungent smells, e.g. disinfectants, medicines, etc. Where a stranger is touching and turning the animal. Looking in its ears, mouth, approaching it with various instruments, all of which is both frightening and unpleasant. On top of that, they often have something really painful done to them: they get chipped, injected, and sometimes have a wound or injury treated. These experiences are usually stored as bad memories in the animal’s mind. So that it only needs to see the door of the clinic (or, in the worst case, recognise the route or just guess from the vaccination book where you are going that day…) to escape.

There is a solution!

But the good news is that as an owner, you can do a lot to relieve your dog’s anxiety, even if he’s scared of the vet.

  1. The first step is to find the right person you and your pet can trust.
  2. It is also very important to make a visit to the doctor a good experience. It can help if the first one or two visits are really just visits, so nothing happens to the dog. At most he gets a little petting and a few tasty treats.
  3. And when the situation is acute, try to distract your dog. Talk to him, maybe give him a task to do. As long as you don’t interfere with the examination, of course! If the veterinarian is listening to the patient’s heart or lungs and the owner is talking, it makes the examination impossible. If you are unsure of the correct behaviour, ask the vet what is and is not allowed.
  4. It is also very useful to “try out” from time to time at home the special treatments that the doctor uses. Look in your pet’s mouth, ears, lift his legs, turn him on his back, etc. This way he will not find these movements unusual and scary.
  5. Don’t be nervous either! Your dog will tune in to your mood very quickly, so it’s important that you’re calm during the vet visit. Of course, this is not easy if you’re there because of an illness or accident, but for your dog’s sake, try to keep your cool even in difficult situations.
  6. And if you’re just going for a routine check-up or a pre-planned vaccination, organise your day around the visit. Give your dog his favourite food that day, go for a walk or play before you leave. And after the examination, be extra cuddly with your hero. This will make up for the hardships he’s endured, while reinforcing that a visit to the doctor isn’t such a terrible thing.

We hope you will take our advice and you can make your visits to the vet a good experience. And we also hope that the little Bernese Mountain Dog  will be more relaxed in time!
